30 Days, 30 Monsters day seven
↳ Rodan

So, I love me some fucking kaiju. And for whatever reason, my absolute favorites tend to be the absolute dorkiest. Take, for instance, Rodan.

Rodan is a big ol’ winged birdy monster with some chicken-like tendencies. Rodan started out as a standalone but was later merged with the rest of Toho’s canon and, like most kaiju, ended up throwing down with Godzilla. Rodan is one of the only kaiju unaffected by Godzilla’s atomic breath, making up for his general lack of armor or brute strength. The simple act of flying is destructive with Rodan, the flapping of his wings sometimes leveling entire cities. He’s also super fast.

I first watched Rodan with my dad when I was a kid. My father, who was six when the first Rodan came out, saw it when he was a very young boy and it fucked him up for a good long while. The threat of Rodan flying overhead and destroying his house was a very real one. It makes sense, since the initial appearances of Rodan are much more rooted in horror-sci-fi than some of the later crossover Toho films. I don’t quite know what inspired my father to grab his young daughter and subject her to the same thing that horrified him as a kid, but it might give some insight into who I am today.

If you like and enjoy Godzilla '14, you don't at all have to justify why you like it to others by saying something like; “I totally get why people don’t like it, though”, as if that’s necessary to validate your enjoyment. You like what you like, and don’t be ashamed of it! Don’t let others make or skew your opinion for you.

My first voice-over work as an actor was on Godzilla. This made me smile.
